I love this take on “brain-mushing activities.”
Dr. Shue hits it on the head (pun intended?) in her post (excerpt below) -
“On a more serious note(sorry, I couldn’t help myself), please recognize that brain-mushing activities are simply the reverse of brain-enhancing activities. Not to state the obvious, but that means that anything you do that gets in the way of your brain’s natural plasticity abilities — its propensity to change and grow and keep on changing — is mush-producing.
Brain Mush is associated with:- letting brain cells and their connections weaken from disuse
- strengthening the few connections you’ve got left by doing the same things over and over and over and …
- failing to provide the stimulation necessary to create new connections and strengthen those new connections by not taking on new learning activities”
