Rule Five – Be Extraordinary

Living by the rules inherently makes life ordinary. As a coach I see people on a daily basis who are trapped by their own rules.

Some of them create rules for others.  How do you think that works out.

It is good to obey all the rules when you’re young, so you’ll have the strength to break them when you’re old. Mark Twain

Hoisted by Our Own Petard?

Maybe si, mayb no.

How can you get a birds eye view of  often invisible rules you carry with you wherever you go?

It’s too easy to treat life like a math problem. First you do this, then you add this, then you subtract that and then you get…

  • the “sum” that you are seeking
  • them to do what you want them to
  • your just rewards
  • to the top of the ladder  (Here’s a question on that one – Whose ladder is it? Yours? The one you want to be on?)
If you are doing math, this is a good plan.  In math, you want to get the same answer every time. Well, usually.  When I count the money in my pocket, I am always left wishing there were a wee bit more.

Is life a math problem?

No, life is more like a waterfall, a sunset, or perhaps a rainstorm — always the same, and yet always unique.  Both their sameness and their uniqueness are limited only by a universe possibilities – and maybe a little physics.

Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise [people] – via Douglas Bader
