Creating an (ugh) elevator speech for This Old Brain.Net — the boomers blog.
Maybe you’re like this, too –
Sometimes, my brain does what I want it to do. Other times it seems to have a mind of it’s own. My goal is always to optimize the former, and to understand and go against the latter, where I seem to be stuck at the moment.
I am doing Darren Rowse’s 31 Days to Build a Better Blog (31DBBB). The first assignment was to design an elevator speech for this blog (I have another, but that’s another story). I have never been a fan of elevator speeches. They always sound contrived and smarmy to me – and programmed. Hence, the fact arises that we are on day 7 of the 31 days, and I am still working on this one. Not that I haven’t done the others, this one just keeps landing on the back burner.
On the other hand, whether I use such a “speech” or not, it may be helpful to give it a go if only to focus my writing. Ahh, but this creates a new problem, that of “Should I have a niche blog, or ….?”
So, I thought I would give it a shot here today, even thought I feel like Sisyphus waiting for the boulder to roll back down on me. Okay, maybe it’s not quite that dramatic.
Sometime around the first of the year, Chris Brogan wrote what I call the Three Words Post suggesting the idea of three words to carry as goals through 2009. I went back and took a look at mine from his comments page -
Contribute.
Improve my writing, find my pace and voice, and provide value wherever I am present on and off line.
Grow.
Continue to expand what I do, find out what works and what is helpful, and do more of it.
Learn.
Find and learn from the masters.
Looking back at them, I can say that, yes, they still fit. so seeing it as an opportunity to grow and learn, here is a stab at the ‘elevator speech’ for This Old Brain.Net. Just bear in mind, I am going against the brain -
“Building Better Brains, Bodies, and Businesses for Boomers through Writing, Blogging, and Coaching”
Your Turn –
Does this describe a niche’?
If you read it as a stand alone statement, would it make sense to you?

Hi Mike,
I think you have done a good job with this post!
I'm a part of the Blog challenge, too. Great to see how others, like you have solved
todays "job"!

Thanks,
I am illogically resistant to the elevator speech thing. I have tried to use them in person for marketing services and have never really been able to get them out of my mouth. This was a challenge at first.
I do appreciate your comment.
Mike
