Mindset Reset
I heard Jack Welch quoted somewhere the other day. He said today’s economy is not in a recession or a depression; this is a complete reset. It needs to be more of a reboot. Clear out the old programming buildup of the old and create a fresh start.
On the other hand, that doesn’t help those of us who are not getting a rescue package, a bailout, a golden parachute, or even a gold watch (Timex of course) as we are shoved off Mr, Buffet’s cliff. I have friends who are small business owners and others who are working for big business people. They are all worried, just from different perspectives. One may worry about when the contracts are going to be cancelled while the latter is worried about employment being cancelled. Let’s face it, there is a lot of dark unknown out in front of us.
Even so, some employers are giving people the opportunity to surf this stress storm. As I see it, successful offerings may, at first glance, seem outside the norm. A Boston Globe article discusses some fo the creative ways that business and managers are attempting to help people weather the rought times.
Calming the Worried Brain
A couple of my favorites are offering mindfulness and yoga classes at work. Both are exercises that can help in the overall health of employees, and to decrease the allostatic load created by overwhelming stress.
Another company is trying something that almost seems unique today. They are keeping employees informed of what is happening. Organizations are made up of people and are stressed at every level. My guess is that for the most part, honesty is the way that people generally operate. The other side of that coin is that today’s climate may make people wonder if this is true.
Okay, Everybody stay Qualm
Honesty and transparency are also exercises in mindfulness. At a brain level, when the monster is named
the monster is tamed, at least for a while.
It makes sense to see some of the things as band-aids. Then for any of us to have the resliency to come back from any loss, the first thing that is necessary when there is an injury is first aid.
I hope these creative acts are just a first thing.
