Rule Three – Mental Models

Rules are part of the mental model of life each of us has; mental models are the way our brains make sense of things.  Unfortunately, our mental models are flawed.  It isn’t possible for them not to be.  Life moves too fast for our brains to keep up.

I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. via Robert Heinlen

Life is forever changing, as are circumstances.  Mental models are a fixed view of the world.  Even if it was right yesterday, it may be obsolete today.  The conundrum? The further you are up the ladder of success, the further away you are from the core information.

Sometimes you have to go against your brain and just do the right thing for the moment.
